180814-N-IK959-4265 NEWPORT, R. I., (Aug. 14, 2018) Lt. Michelle Tanalega, an instructor at the Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS), goes over the operation of a Conning Officer Virtual Environment (NSS COVE I) simulator with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Midshipman 1st Class James Olsen, a rising senior at the George Washington University from Portland, Oregon. More than 15 midshipmen, from NROTC units across the country, competed to be named the 2018 NROTC National Ship-handler of the Year. The three-day event used the COVE I and III simulators at SWOS as the midshipmen were judged in several virtual reality conning and ship driving scenarios. (U. S. Navy image by Scott A.
