Maj Renee Krebs, Veterinary Medical Center Europe Deputy Director and Veterinary Surgeon, prepares Alex, a Military Working Dog from the 91st Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade, for leg amputation surgery.
Alex was recently injured in Afghanistan and suffered shrapnel wounds to his left leg and back side as well as a broken bone in that same leg. He was medically evacuated to the VMCE, Pulaski Barracks, Germany, for care. The VMCE provides comprehensive veterinary care to MWDs and is a Category IV veterinary hospital.
After spending more than a week at VMCE, Alex's back left leg continued to get worse, so Krebs made the decision to amputate. She said that amputation would not only relieve him of the pain he was having, but would also provide a quicker recovery time.
