The Hartwell Dam and Lake Project hosted a clean-up campaign in the weeks leading up to National Public Lands Day, Sept. 24, 2011. The campaign concluded on NPLD with clean-up activities and a volunteer appreciation picnic at Big Oaks Recreation Area. In total, about 500 volunteers contributed to Hartwell's clean-up campaign and exceeded 1,000 volunteer hours.
