U.S. Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), presents the Defense Superior Service Medal to U.S. Navy Rear Adm. John Spencer during his promotion ceremony on the missile deck at USSTRATCOM headquarters on Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., Aug. 9, 2018. Spencer is the executive assistant to Gen. Hyten. His next assignment will be the director of Nuclear Support Directorate, Defense Threat Reduction Agency at Ft. Belvoir, Va. USSTRATCOM has global responsibilities assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence, nuclear operations, space operations, joint electromagnetic spectrum operations, global strike, missile defense, and analysis and targeting.
