Command Sgt. Maj. Billy J. Norman, U.S. Army Garrison Japan command sergeant major and Col. Phillip K. Gage, garrison commander, present the Daruma doll to those who are present at the Aug. 10 assumption of responsibility ceremony, in the Camp Zama Community Club. Daruma, a Japanese symbol of good luck, is characterized by a weighted bottom so that it always returns to an upright position when it is tipped over. The eyes of a new Daruma are left unpainted. The person paints in one eye while praying for the fulfillment of some special wish. They then place the Daruma in the family shrine or their office. If the wishes are fulfilled, the other eye is painted in. The other eye will be painted upon the successful completion of his tenure. (U.S. Army photo by Kiyoshi Tokeshi)
