Command Master Chief Rafael Perez, command master chief of the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York, finds the name of Steven Mercado, a childhood friend, while visiting the National Sept. 11 Memorial. Mercado was killed during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks while working as a first responder with Engine Company 40 of the New York Fire Department. The ship is in New York to take part in commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
