The Syrian Democratic Forces Engineer Support Unit use a track hoe excavator to place each piece of the bridge floor into place on the unit’s first roadway bridge in Jarniyah, Syria, July 15, 2018. The recently graduated 20-person platoon’s mission is to rebuild bridges in liberated areas of Northern Syria that were destroyed during ISIS’ reign. The SDF ESU is the first of six new engineer units that will each focus on different aspects of rebuilding and stabilizing critical infrastructure. Prior to graduation, the SDF engineers worked alongside Coalition partners to complete a practical bridging exercise before taking the lead in the two-day rebuild of the Kharbet Al Shafrat Bridge.
