NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Coast Guard Academy graduates the largest group of African-American cadets to graduate from the institution, May 24, 2018.
The 18 newly-minted ensigns were given lieutenant commander shoulder boards, a rank usually achieved after 10 years of Coast Guard service, as a memento to encourage them to stay in the Coast Guard and become leaders in the service.
