Lt. Col. Neil F. Murphy, Jr., lays a white rose at the base of a recovered piece of the World Trade Center buildings turned into a memorial, Sept. 9. Marines and sailors from USS New York joined other locally stationed troops, first responders and veterans for a ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Murphy is a Boston-native Marine assigned to Regional Command Southwest, based in Afghanistan. The amphibious transport dock ship USS New York's crew is here to participate in numerous events throughout the city honoring the victims and responders from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The ship was built with 7.5 tons of steel recovered from Ground Zero. The ship is scheduled is anchored in the Hudson River Sept. 10-12. On Sept. 11, the USS New York will move from its anchorage in the Hudson River to a location within sight of the World Trade Center.
