ORLANDO, Fla. (Jan. 25, 2015) - Dr. Tony Buhr, senior Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division biologist, performs a test at a technology demonstration for the Joint Biological Agent Decontamination System Program in Orlando International Airport. “We collected spore samples of a commonly used, organic insecticide called Bacillus thuringiensis, which was prepared with our test methods, before and after the hot, humid air decontamination of the entire aircraft,” said Buhr. “The aircraft was started up after the demonstration to show the electronics and engines were operational.” Buhr received the 2017 Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientists and Engineers Award for Individual Engineers at a June 29, 2018 Pentagon ceremony in recognition of his contributions to the Navy's chemical, biological and radiological defense. Specifically, he was honored for his work in developing a new and highly reliable testing regimen for evaluating effectiveness in biological defenses, increasing the confidence level of those defenses up to 95 percent.
