A photo display of a previous sculpture in honor of President Woodrow Wilson stands in front of the current monument July 4, 2018, ahead of a ceremony at Wilson Park in Poznań, Poland, to commemorate Wilson’s contributions to an independent and free Poland. On Jan. 8, 1918, Wilson gave his Fourteen Points speech, which focused on a peaceful way forward from World War I. Point 13 stated “An independent Polish state should be erected which should include the territories inhabited by indisputably Polish populations, which should be assured a free and secure access to the sea, and whose political and economic independence and territorial integrity should be guaranteed by international covenant.” The monument shown in the display was designed and created by Gutzon Borglum, the sculpture who designed Mount Rushmore, in Keystone, South Dakota, and was erected on July 4, 1931. It was later destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. The current monument with Wilson’s bust on it was erected in 1994.
