Sergeant Maj. Sael Garcia, far right, the 1st Infantry Division Mission Command Element sergeant major, and Major Eric Anderson, second from right, a civil affairs officer with the 415th Civil Affairs Battalion, salute during the playing of the Polish national anthem during a ceremony at Wilson Park, Poznań, Poland, July 4, 2018, to commemorate President Woodrow Wilson’s contributions to Poland’s independence. Anderson and Garcia would later lay flowers in honor of Wilson on behalf of the U.S. Army. On Jan. 8, 1918, Wilson gave his Fourteen Points speech, which focused on a peaceful way forward from World War I. Point 13 stated, “An independent Polish state should be erected which should include the territories inhabited by indisputably Polish populations, which should be assured a free and secure access to the sea, and whose political and economic independence and territorial integrity should be guaranteed by international covenant.”
