A pair U.S. Army soldiers and a U.S. Air Force air mobility liaison officer use rocks to hold markers in place along the runway at the Qalat, Afghanistan, landing zone Aug 12, 2011. The markers are used by pilots to judge specific distances on the austere runway. A group of about 12 soldiers are being taught the procedures and responsibilities of a landing zone safety officer by a certified Army LZSO and an Air Force AMLO.
