    1st Infantry Division

Brigadier Gen. Richard R. Coffman, 1st Infantry Division Mission Command Element commander, Sgt. Maj. Sael Garcia, 1st Inf. Div. MCE sergeant major, and Lt. Col. Gerald Walsh, 415th Civil Affairs Battalion commander, commemorate the 1956 Poznań Uprising by laying a wreath on behalf of the United States Army during a ceremony June 28, 2018, at the Crosses monument in Poznań, Poland, in honor of the Polish citizens who stood up against communist rule 62 years ago. The massive protests in 1956 were the first of many in which hundreds of Polish people sacrificed their lives for the independence of Poland. Hundreds of Polish citizens, including uprising participants, attended the ceremony. Coffman, Garcia and Walsh are deployed to Poznań in support of U.S. Army Europe’s Atlantic Resolve mission, which aims to assure NATO Allies and partner nations of United States’ commitment to the Alliance and to build interoperability between those countries’ militaries while deterring aggression in that region.
