A tourist from Hong Kong, Ching-Yi Sze, was panicking underwater, had removed her air regulator and was beginning to take in water when Dahn came to her aid. He provided her with oxygen while swimming her to shore, where he cared for her while his wife called for paramedics. Dahn, the training chief for 3rd Maintenance Battalion, 3rd MLG, III Marine Expeditionary Force, is a native of Herron, Michigan and his wife, April B. Dahn is a native of Encinitas, California.
