    Commander, Submarine Group Nine

“Originally, being on submarines was my back-up plan. Besides what I had seen in the movie ‘Down Periscope,’ I didn’t know anything about submarines. When my recruiter told me that I would part of the first group of enlisted women to be on submarines though, I changed my mind. I knew this would be an incredible opportunity and it has been. I will be able to be a mentor to other women in the future and help pave the way for a smooth transition for integrated submarine crews. I am now part of this incredible family. Being on a submarine is like being on a boat full of brothers. When I am on leave and away from the boat, I actually miss them. It is such an amazing thing to be apart of.” Electronics Technician (Navigation) 2nd Class Lindsay Helms, assigned to the Blue Crew of the Ohio-class guided missile submarine USS Michigan (SSGN 727).
