Leilani Estates, Hawaii, May 30, 2018 – Lava continues to flow east towards the Kapoho Bay area, bursting homes into flames and altering the landscape on the Big Island. Volcanic gas emissions remain very high from the fissure eruptions. At the request of the state, FEMA staff are on the ground to support local officials with life-saving emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged publicly-owned facilities.
