Pāhoa, Hawaii, May 23, 2018 – Lava erupts from a fissure in the Leilani Estates neighborhood. U.S. Geological Survey and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor the lower East Rift Zone activity 24/7 in coordination with Hawaii County Civil Defense. Geologists are onsite to track fissure activity and the advance of lava flows. FEMA staff are on the ground to support local officials with life-saving emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged publicly-owned facilities.
