Hironobu Sugawara, head of the delegation for the Home-Stay Program, speaks about the help the people of Oshima District received from the Marine Corps after the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake during an opinion exchange meeting held on Camp Foster Aug. 8. During The Home-Stay Program, coordinated by Marine Corps Bases Japan, students and chaperones from the Oshima District stayed with host families and experienced the Okinawan and American cultures. "On April 1, 177 Marines with equipment landed at Oshima. We offered transportation, but they knew we were short of fuel, so they walked about 1.7 kilometers carrying heavy items," said Hironobu Sugawara, the head of the delegation for the program. “When the Marines arrived at the site where they removed debris, the first thing they did was line up and offer a prayer for the victims. I was truly moved.”
