The U.S. Army recruit training camp seen in 1918 in Syracuse, N.Y. The camp provided training to new recruits and National Guard Citizen Soldiers in America’s mobilization for World War I. Known as Camp Syracuse, located on a portion of the New York state fairgrounds, the center processed more than 40,000 Soldiers. The camp transitioned in the summer of 1918 to train draftees with medical limitations for “special and limited service.” These Soldiers were otherwise unqualified for combat duties, but still expected to serve in rear echelons or on the home front.
