SHIMODA, Japan (May 18, 2018) Cmdr. Simon McKeon, Commanding Officer of USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) participates in burning incense during the Memorial Service at the Gyokusenji Temple in Shimoda to honor the Sailors lost during the first arrival to Shimoda. The 79th Shimoda Black Ship Festival promotes peaceful relations between the Japanese and American people and commemorates the 164th anniversary of the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan in 1854, an event which marked the beginning of diplomacy and trade agreements between the U.S. and Japan.
