Cockscomb Veterans Bush Retreat gives Australian veterans and visitors a beautiful scenic backdrop to relax in and enjoy the day. Members of the U.S. and Australian militaries volunteered time to help on projects at the retreat to improve the area for Australian veterans and service members during Talisman Sabre 2011. Rehabilitation of the site has become a biennial combined effort during down time during Talisman Sabre. Cockscomb, derives its name from the mountain now known as Mount Wheeler. The retreat, located at the base of this mountain, was originally named Cockscomb by Capt. Cook in 1770. Talisman Sabre 2011 is an exercise designed to train U.S. and Australian forces to plan and conduct combined task force operations to improve combat readiness and interoperability on a variety of missions from conventional conflict to peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance efforts.
