Over the years, visitors have left behind a variety of World War II memorabilia in homage to service members who valiantly fought on the island. Mt. Suribachi is the site where four Marines and one Sailor raised the American flag during the 36-day World War II battle of Iwo Jima between February 19, 1945 - March 26, 1945.
