Giant cranes that will enable the Port NewarkâElizabeth (New Jersey) Marine Terminal handle bigger container ships and unload more quickly are waiting in New York-New Jersey harbor's busy lower bay in front of a Fort Hamilton Civil War-era cannon. They will pass under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that connects Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York following preparations onboard and when the time and conditions are right.
Opening of the Panama Canal's new, larger locks in 2016 and New York District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers's completion of its 50-foot harbor deepening project and mean that larger container ships are arriving in the NY-NJ harbor.
