More than 500 members of the Massachusetts National Guard show their mettle while supporting local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety partners, during a cold and rainy Patriots' Day, April 16, 2018. The soldiers and airmen are positioned along all 26.2 miles of the Boston Marathon route, from Hopkinton to Boston. Among the Airmen present were Security Forces Defenders from the 104th Fighter Wing, Barnes Air National Guard Base, Westfield Massachusetts. The National Guard provides specialized chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and improvised explosive detections teams, as well as medical and security personnel, to assist local communities along the route to ensure the race is safe and successful. The Massachusetts National Guard remains trained, equipped and ready to assist local, state and federal emergency responders to protect the safety of the citizens of Massachusetts.
