Spc. Austin Richardson, a nodal network operator with Signal Intelligence Support Company, HHB 101st, Abn. Div. (Air Assault) - “Gladiators” and a native of Jacksonville, Florida, enjoys giving the ability to communicate, to all soldiers.
“I liked the idea of working with routers and switches and giving soldiers the ability to communicate anywhere,” Richardson said, while on a short break from laying wire for Exercise Eagle Talon II.
While at Eagle Talon II, the communications shop Richardson works for has the job of providing redundancies for every type of communication, from phone calls and emails to internet access for the computer based simulations of the event.
“We’re providing coverage for the mission by ensuring we have redundancies across the board. If the main line, the fibre, goes down, our satellites should pick up without missing a beat,” said Richardson.
Richardson said he would like to thank the civilian contractors from General dynamics who came out to help with networking issues.
Before joining the Army, Richardson was a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked at a nursing home.
“I left nursing because I wanted a change of pace,” said Richardson. “I liked what I did, but I felt like I could be doing more.”
Richardson’s dad served 20 years in the Marine Corps, so Richardson felt compelled to serve his country as well.
“I chose this job because I wanted a job that will translate into a good career post Army,” said Richardson.
