    Born in Estonia, Einseln immigrated to the United States in 1949 and enrolled in the U.S. Army in 1950 at the outbreak of the Korean War. He served with Special Forces in the Vietnam War and retiring as a Colonel in 1985. In 1993, Einseln returned to Estonia at the request of Estonian President Lennart Meri to serve as the first commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, holding this post until his resignation in 1995.
    Einseln died on March 16, 2017. His widow, Kitti Einseln, received the American flag from his casket during the full honors service.
