Gingrich, a platoon leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry Regiment, Task Force Ironman, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, Task Force Red Bulls, from Cedar Falls, Iowa, inspects the site of a previously detonated improvised explosive device while one of his soldiers looks on. Gingrich and his soldiers dismounted from a mounted convoy to Mehtar Lam to clear the danger zone. Separated by roughly 15 miles, he and his brother serve in two of the most demanding provinces in northeastern Afghanistan.
