The former 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Headquarters Building, Building 80, is torn down after more than 60 years of service aboard Cherry Point, June 15. The building was built in the mid 1940s as a temporary home for the human resources office, civil engineering office and a financial office before becoming the headquarters building for the 2nd MAW in January 2008 after the old headquarters burnt down Sept. 8, 2007. “Building 80 was demolished to help build the larger more productive headquarters building we have today,” said Don M. Elliott, the station facilities development officer. “Also to renovate that building would have cost a lot more than what that building is worth. A piece of this bases history.”
