Spc. Paul Nickens, a native of Cameron, N.C., and a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter crew chief, looks out onto Pike’s Peak during a training flight in the Rocky Mountain’s just west of Fort Carson, Colo., May 13. For Nickens, other crew chiefs and the door gunners with 2nd Aviation Assault Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, the High Altitude Mountain Environmental Training at Fort Carson is a chance to train as a crucial member of the flight crew for their deployment to eastern Afghanistan. These crew members are responsible for helping to clear the air around and the ground below where the pilots might not be able to see.
