Lance Corporal Hector Arenas, S-1 clerk, taps the mat during training to let Hospital Corpsman Third Class Nicholas Vath, Navy general corpsman, know that he is experiencing pain under the proper self defense move being instructed by Juan Rivera, S-6 director, during the grappling club training aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., Feb. 15. Tapping on the mat is a means of submission during a combative sport, or training in this case, and allows the opponent to understand that they have achieved victory, or that their demonstrated combative move has had provided the intentional affect.
