Bintu Sowe, an associate scientist at the U.S. Army Center for Environmental Health Research at Fort Detrick, Maryland, processes samples in June 2017 from a bone healing experiment conducted aboard the International Space Station. Sowe’s lab is part of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRMC), which historically has struggled to recruit experts when they can make twice the amount of money that the government can offer by working for the pharmaceutical or biotech industry.
