A U.S. Air Force boom operator, assigned to the 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron Detachment 1, conducts a pre-flight inspection of a KC-135 Stratotanker before take-off at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan Jan. 31, 2018. The purpose of a pre-flight inspection is to ensure the aircraft and all of its various systems are in good working order to fly and carry out its mission. The KC-135 is extends the reach of aircraft like the A-10 Thunderbolt II and F-16 Fighting Falcon, which are deployed to Afghanistan to support counterterror combat operations.
