The Battle Cruiser USS Indianapolis ship’s bell sits in the foreground at Monument Circle in Indianapolis, during the 500 Festival Memorial Service, May 27. The bell was rung in memory of the fallen. The USS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II after delivering a top-secret payload of nuclear weapons materials to the Pacific Theater. Almost 900 sailors survived the sinking, but only 317 survived the following four-and-a-half days at sea before rescue.
