MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Soldiers with the Western Army Infantry Regiment, Japan Ground Self Defense Force, secure a fast rope by anchoring it with their bodies shortly after fast roping out the back of an MV-22 Osprey during exercise Iron Fist 2018, Jan. 23. During a fast rope, the first Soldier out of the aircraft will land on the deck and immediately secure the end of the rope to make the rope more stable for the rest of his team. Iron Fist is an annual, bilateral training exercise where U.S. and Japanese service members train together and share techniques, tactics and procedures to improve their combined operational capabilities.
