The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District constructs the northern stretch of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in Mississippi Sept. 12, 1981. The Mobile District and Nashville District, 125 prime contractors and 1,200 subcontractors worked on the overall waterway. The 10 locks and five dams required a total of 2.2 million cubic yards of concrete and 33,000 tons of reinforcing steel. The project, dedicated in 1985, is the largest civil works project ever constructed in the United States. (USACE Photo)
