HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Ma. – In April of 1965, Martin Luther King led a civil rights march from Roxbury to the Boston Common. That rally began at a park named for Sgt. William E. Carter, a local African-American soldier that served in 6th Massachusetts Regiment. Carter fought in Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War and in France, where he was killed in action, during World War I. (US Army photo illustration by Spc. Samuel D. Keenan)
