Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Black, a power systems technician with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Recovery Field Office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, oversees the installation a the micro grid in Patillas on Dec. 17, 2017. The micro grid concept brings approximately 5 megawatts of power directly into the existing infrastructure in the area, bringing electricity to nearby buildings. The concept is significant in that it is a temporary power mission – usually intended to support critical infrastructure during an emergency – bringing electricity to residents and buildings. The installation – the second micro grid installed on the island – will be operational by midweek, with the third set to open in nearby Maunabo shortly after.
