Master Gunnery Sergeant Shane H. Maria, the oldest Marine present, accepts a piece of the birthday cake during the 6th Marine Corps District 242nd Marine Corps Ball at the Omni Hotel Hilton Head, South Carolina, Nov 3, 2017. As is tradition, a piece of the cake is given to the oldest and youngest Marines present symbolizing the experience and youthful spirit that are hallmarks of the Corps. The Marines, Sailors and their families celebrated the Marine Corps Birthday Ball to increase morale and foster camaraderie throughout the District.
