Colonel Jeffrey C. Smitherman, Commanding Officer of 6th Marine Corps District (6MCD), cuts the birthday cake during 6MCD’s 242nd Marine Corps Ball at the Omni Hotel Hilton Head, South Carolina, Nov 3, 2017. The cake is traditionally cut with a noncommissioned officer’s sword. The Marines, Sailors and their families celebrated the Marine Corps Birthday Ball to increase morale and foster camaraderie throughout the District.
