This burnt-out personal alert safety system was the only piece of gear, belonging to then-Airman 1st Class William Taylor, which survived when he was trapped and alone in a training fire in July 1997 near Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Taylor said the damaged PASS is sentimental and serves as a reminder of how dangerous a firefighter’s job is, and that they have the potential to be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice in service of fellow patriots.
