Diversity in the Military: “Inspire those who follow us” to Shape America’s Future

DAHLGREN, Va. (Sept. 28, 2017) - Isha Renta, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologist, dances to Bomba music played by Semilla Cultural (Cultural Seed) volunteers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) sponsored Hispanic Heritage Observance. The performers on stage are NSWCDD scientists and engineers. Renta founded the Semilla Cultural nonprofit organization to cultivate a community that embraces diversity by educating, promoting and disseminating Puerto Rican culture and traditions. The Bomba is a dialogue between the primo drummer and the dancer where the dancer dictates the rhythm of the percussion and the drummer follows the dancer's body and skirt movements. The primo drummer improvises as the dancer challenges the drummer to follow the dancer's improvised movements, called piquetes. Bomba singing is based on a call-response structure in which the lead singer begins the song and is answered by a melody sung by the chorus. (U.S. Navy photo by Dan Eberly/Released)
