Joe Gottschalk (left) and Billy Gottschalk (right) pose for a photo together in front of a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, after they were awarded the Coast Guard Public Service Commendation at Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, Oct. 11, 2017.

The Gottschalk brothers were commended for their lifesaving efforts when they steered their scanoe toward four boogie boarders who were caught in a rip current in Strathmere, New Jersey. The pair made their way to the four people and gave their lifejackets to two children. In conjunction with a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, all of the boogie boarders were hoisted to safety; however the Gottshalk's scanoe capsized, causing them to swim to shore through harsh breaking surf.
