Col. Andrew MacMannis, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit commanding officer and Capt. Bradley Lee, commander, Amphibious Squadron 11, board a CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter aboard the flight deck of the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex en route to USS Ronald Reagan. Essex, USS Harpers Ferry and USS Germantown with the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit are currently operating off the coast of Hachinohe in northeastern Japan in support of Operation Tomodachi.
