During the Battle of the Pusan Perimeter, Master Sgt. Ernest R. Kouma, Company A, 72nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, led his men on a nine-hour withdrawal through North Korean forces that had them cut off. His actions were estimated to kill over 250 enemy Soldiers. For his actions, Kouma was awarded the Medal of Honor. Kouma enlisted in Dwight, Neb. in June 1940.
