James Lee, a biologist with The Nature Conservancy, is interviewed by the media in the gopher tortoise nursery before going to the release site. The goal of the Head-Start Program at Camp Shelby is to supplement the current, aging population of tortoises with offspring raised to a size that will greatly increase their chances of survival in the wild. Training at Camp Shelby has very little negative effect on the tortoises, Lee said, and the frequent controlled burns actually improve their habitat. Gopher tortoises can live more than 70 years and the primary threat is predation of tortoises under three-years-old. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Scott Tynes)
