Helicopters and airplanes line the tarmac at Naval Air facility Misawa as aviation units from around the world converge on the northern-Japanese base in support of Operation Tomodachi. Operation Tomodachi (Japanese for “friendship”) involves 14 U.S. Navy ships, more than 100 aircraft and thousands of U.S. service members assisting with disaster relief and humanitarian development assistance.
