    Lt. Col. Ryan Larson, a field surgeon attached to the 602nd Area Support Medical Company, 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 44th Medical Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C., provides medical care to a patient at a medical tent outside the Schneider Regional Medical Center in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Sept. 16, 2017. Larson is attached to the unit through the Professional Filler System, which adds personnel to a unit to fill in for operational needs. Soldiers of the 602nd ASMC help provide triage, a variety of medical treatments, and pre-evacuation care after Hurricane Irma. The Department of Defense conducts Defense Support of Civil Authorities operations to assist civilian responders in saving lives, relieving human suffering and mitigating property damage in response to a catastrophic disaster.
