Arizona Air National Guard members with the Logistics Readiness Squadron, 161st Air Refueling Wing, load critical care operating room kits at the Cyril E. King Airport, Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Sept. 16, 2017, for a U.S. Air Force surgical team, 595th Inpatient Operations Squadron, 95th Medical Wing, Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The airmen are augmenting the soldiers of the 602nd Area Support Medical Company, 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 44th Medical Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C., to provide triage, a variety of medical treatments, and pre-evacuation care after Hurricane Irma caused major damage at the local hospital. The Department of Defense conducts Defense Support of Civil Authorities operations to assist civilian responders in saving lives, relieving human suffering and mitigating property damage in response to a catastrophic disaster.
