170909-N-TH560-632 CORAL SEA (Sept. 9, 2017) Marines, assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), fire a Stinger Tracking and Launch Simulator missile from the port aircraft elevator of the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6). The Stinger is a portable, infrared, homing, surface-to-air missile, capable of tracking and engaging aircraft up to an altitude of 10,000 feet and covering distances up to five miles. Bonhomme Richard, flagship of the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG), is operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to enhance partnerships and be a ready-response force for any type of contingency.
